N E X T  G E N E R A T I O N  Builders

In 2018, the CHBA partnered with students at Wando High School to build a Tiny House in efforts to encourage students to pursue careers in many professions and trades involved in the construction of homes.

The CHBA's next project is Builder in a Box, an educational platform on how to use everyday tools and introduce kids of all ages to the basics of measuring, cutting, hammering, and more.  The goal of Builder in a Box is to tap into and pique the interest of undeveloped skills in trades such as framing/woodwork, plumbing, electric, landscape, masonry, painting and tile, just to name a few.  So stay tuned for the future of the building industry!

The Charleston Home Builders Association is committed to the future of the Lowcountry through strengthening the local housing industry's workforce with skilled construction tradesmen & women. In order to solve the labor shortage, we have created a group called Next Generation Builders, whose efforts are focused solely on teaching the kids the opportunities available working in the trades.

A Simple Intro into Using Tools

The CHBA Builder in a Box is an educational platform on how to use everyday tools and introduce kids of all ages to the basics of measuring, cutting, hammering, and more.  The goal of Builder in a Box is to tap into and pique the interest of undeveloped skills in trades such as framing/woodwork, plumbing, electric, landscape, masonry, painting and tile, just to name a few.

Tools included in each box are tape measurer, construction pencil, hammer, nails, wrench, pliers, screwdrivers, screws, miter box, saw, wood chisel, level, utility knife, stud finder, speed square and sanding block, and will develop periodically with each age group and skill level.

Be Pro Be Proud SC is a workforce development project designed to close the skills-gap in South Carolina. We are taking a unique, targeted approach to remove the stigma from “blue-collar” jobs with the goal of educating students and the public on the appeal and the importance of these jobs for our economy.

A custom-designed, military-grade, double-expandable semi trailer will be loaded with hands-on simulators of a variety of skilled trades including welding, truck driving, heavy equipment operation, diesel technician, lineman, and more. It will travel throughout the state to schools, fairs, career centers, conventions, government events, military re-entry programs, and more.
